Cheap & Chic, FashionThe Great Boyfriend Shirt

I’ve been on a recent quest for the perfect “boyfriend” shirt: a slouchy, oversized, airy men’s type shirt that I can sling on over sundresses or wear belted low over shorts.  I came across my perfect iteration recently at the most unlike of places, Forever 21, a store that I normally avoid for the crowds and general clothing chaos.

After a shopping trip to Whole Foods, I decided to enter Forever 21 on a whim, and my eye was caught by the display of white boyfriend shirts, all strategically placed in the front.  Almost all were long tunic styles, varying from pinstripes to slight embroidered lattice style patterns, and all were in a light linen-cotton blend, making them light enough to be gauzy and breezy for the hot summer humidity that’s been hitting NYC so far.  In spite of their thrifty price tags (none of these shirts were more than $30), many of these shirts featured incredible detailing, such as gathering, pintucking and button tabs, all designed to subtly highlight your feminine curves underneath the shirt’s masculine feel.

While in the store, I picked up this Pinstripe Woven Tunic, and it’s easily become one of my favorite pieces this summer.  With a 7 button placket on the front and the back, the shirt is easily convertible to go from shorter to longer, and has a great workman-like feel with its rolled up anchored shirt sleeves.  While the shirt does come across looking a little Puritan-like in this picture with its completely buttoned up collar, don’t be deceived and imagine wearing this as I do with 2-3 buttons loosely undone worn with a broken in leather belt, and denim cutoff shorts.

Cheap & Chic, FashionSail Away

When summer comes around, it seems that I am easily swayed by anything with a sailing reference.  Right now, I’m totally enchanted by this BDG Boatneck Sailor Stripe Top over at Urban Outfitters.

Though it comes in an array of hues, the obvious classic navy and white combo is what captures my too-weak-for-sailor-anything heart. I love the barely there cap sleeve and even more so, I love how it’s not too obviously sailor-inspired and paired correctly, could even give off a French chic vibe (I’m think straight legged jeans, casually arranged scarf and flats).  You could even tuck it into a high-waisted skirt and add layered necklaces for a trendier look that you might be able to away with at the office this summer.

This shirt retails for $28 at urbanoutfitters.com. At that price, you might be able to afford to snap up a couple of colors!

Accessories, Cheap & Chic, JewelryKatharine Sise is Red Hot

You’ve undoubtedly heard about DailyCandy‘s recent collaboration with Target.  The Red Hot Shop, the results of their partnership, features various designers that have created exclusive designs for this specific e-boutique. I filed this one away under “Awesome, will bookmark and check it out later!” (Shame on me!)

Happily, one of my favorite jewelry designers, Katharine Sise sent over an email, alerting me to the fact that she had created a piece for Red Hot Shop. Well, that definitely got me hoppin’ right over to the site. Her normally out-of-my-budget baubles are so covet-worthy and if you’re a long-time reader of this blog, you’ll know that our entire staff loves her pieces. I was thrilled to find that she created a gorgeous MultiChain Necklace for $34.99. (Say what?!) The necklace can be “worn three ways: short and chunky , long and loose , or perfectly pinned in the middle.”  It’s so reflective of her eponymous line that you wouldn’t even be able to notice the difference between the $200 version and this one.

“I’ve been making multi-chain necklaces with this design for almost five years now, and the reaction to them has been great. Jewelry customers love that they can wear the necklace three different ways. So when Target approached me to do a piece for them, I wanted to stay true to my design while staying at a price point that worked for Target’s customer,” says Katharine. “I found these black spangle chains that allowed me to do just that! I’ve been wearing this piece almost every day since I made it; you can wear it shorter with a dress and go out at night, or long and loose during the day over a tank top and jeans. I also love wearing it pinned in the front with a blazer.”

This necklace is one that I can afford and you can bet I’ll be making an order over at Target.com shortly!

Cheap & Chic, FashionBasic BDG

If you’re an avid reader of this blog, you’ll know I’m a sucker for a great silk top. I can’t help but go “ooh” over them and am always on the lookout for fantastic ones that I can wear everywhere for any occasion.

Right now, I’m totally coveting this BDG Silk Tunic from Urban Outfitters, which is very basic yet versatile. This blouse has a loose scoop neck and oversized cuffed square sleeve, which gives it an effortless look.  Belt it over slim jeans and heels for date night.  Tucking it into a skirt makes it perfect for work.  Throw it on with shorts and flat sandals, and you’ll look totally breezy for a weekend brunch. So many ways and places to wear it!

It retails for only $48, which I think it’s fairly affordable for silk.  After trying it on this past weekend, I totally loved how it looked so it might just be a blouse that I actually end up buying.  This top comes in four hues (magenta, green, black and white) at www.urbanoutfitters.com.
