Happy Holidays from all of us at The Daily Obsession! We’ll be posting on an abbreviated schedule for this week to travel, enjoy time with our families, loved ones, and finally conquer those pending Netflix and book queues. But we wanted to thank you, dear readers, for being with us this year. We’re so grateful that we’ve gotten to know you better, and share our life experiences (and some of our favorite fashion and beauty finds.) But we wouldn’t leave you bored. In case you missed it, here are some of our favorite posts from the year of 2012:
- Redheads, listen up! Charli interviews hair legend Marco Pelusi, who talked about his favorite haircolor and the trends to watch for 2013.
- Our first video ever at TDO. Carolyn gets all the tips and tricks from Cover Girl’s ambassador and celebrity makeup artist Jake Bailey, who explains how to get the perfect smoky eye and how to make your beauty looks camera-ready (and looking good in all those holiday pictures.)
- Stacey talks about a Chanel polish that gives her a sense of vertigo, the good kind.
- I talk about my version of The Top Shelf, sharing my beauty philosophy and beauty secrets from my mom (6-step skincare routine, hello.)
- Connie shares about what’s on her Editor’s Vanity, including a bobby pin with a hint of whimsy.
- Seafaring for the holidays? We’re jealous! And Liz has the perfect wrist accessory for your trip.
See you all in 2013!
WHITLEY Designs is a handcrafted jewelry line based in San Francisco that has been recently spotted on Vanessa Hudgens, Maria Menounos, Audrina Patridge and Bella Thorne, to name a few celebs. The collection includes bracelets, earrings, necklaces (shown: Carly), rings, bobby pins, and one-of-a-kind reclaimed vintage pieces. It also offers pieces that are customizable via colorful charms, modern initials, and initial/zodiac discs.
Conceptualized by California-born sisters Whitney and Hayley Stevens (hence the name “Whitley”), the line balances Whitney’s classic style (she is a practicing attorney) with Hayley’s innovative perspective (she is an artist). Each piece is extremely versatile, layers well and goes with almost anything. We caught up with Whitley and Hayley recently to chat about their inspiration behind the line, as well as how they got it off the ground: (more…)
ONE. Sephora Collection’s Houndstooth Mini Brush – If you (or your office-mates) are anything like me, your office desk makeup stash grows throughout the year. First it’s a lipgloss or lipstick in the pencil tray, then as spring rolls around, you add a couple bronzers or blushes, and during the summer (aka when going-out-after-work season is in full force) you start keeping a stash of mascaras, eyeshadows, etc ,etc alongside your Scotch tape and Post-It Notes. But you know what we never have? A handy brush set to help us actually apply our makeup properly throughout the day. Sephora Collection’s Houndstooth Mini Brush set is the answer, featuring a powder, eyeliner, eye shadow, and concealer brush — everything you need for a full face touchup. It also comes in a snazzy shimmery case that fits in even the most compact spaces. Plus for only $15, this set probably only costs half as much as your favorite lipgloss. One for each of your office BFFs, one for youself, (and one for me)! Carolyn
TWO. Poppin – “I’m a moleskin kind of girl, too,” someone confided to me recently, glancing approvingly at the sunshine yellow soft color notebook I was using to take notes. “Actually, I’m a Poppin girl!” I replied, “It’s the new office concept from Chris Burch.” Burch, more fondly known round Poppin parts as Poppa Poppin, is the creator of the Staples meets Pantone meets C.Wonder lovechild. Ever wish that all of your office supplies, from notebooks to pen to stapler, was color coordinated in the same vivid shade of royal purple? Poppin can help. Do you have a serious fetish for high performance Japanese ballpoint pens? Poppin can help. Do you want to match your ruler to this season’s “It”, aqua blue eyeliner? Poppin can help. And for this holiday season, Poppin is doing holiday bundles of its best-sellers. Among my favorites is the “All Bundled Up” package, with scissors, a ball-point pen, folio, and two notebooks in lime green and a grown-up shade of Elle Woods pink. So Pop, Poppin it up. Kathleen
THREE. Working Girl’s Survival Kit – Whether you’re gifting this to a recent college grad getting ready to start her first job or an old friend who has been at the same company for over a decade, any woman will appreciate opening the Working Girl’s Survival Kit. (Even the name is cute!) The small aluminum attache case has 22 different health and beauty items and can be stashed in your desk (or even your car) to get you through any beauty emergency that could possibly happen at work. I don’t know about you, but I’m constantly on the hunt for most of the items in it, so it’s a genius idea to be able to stash them all in one place. The kit includes things like an emery board, a toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, mints, a stain remover… even shoe shine wipes. I kind of want to buy one for all of my friends… and get an extra one for myself. What working girl wouldn’t want one? Stacey (more…)

Having maintained this blog for almost seven years now, it’s obvious that we at TDO think a lot about beauty. We’re always talking about new products we’ve found or are currently obsessed with or have always loved. Feeling (and sharing) beauty isn’t just skin deep to us, however — we truly believe that beauty has the power to make everyone feel confident, happy, and our best.
Recently we teamed up with Meaningful Beauty, a skincare regimen developed by Cindy Crawford and her dermatologist Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh that addresses a lot of the skin challenges faced by women everywhere. As skin ages, it beings to lose luster, moisture, and elasticity (even for supermodels!). Meaningful Beauty skincare contains a powerful super-antioxidant along with rejuvenating ingredients coenzyme Q10 and lipoic acid to help combat a lot of those signs of aging and restore vibrancy. As part of this challenge, we were encouraged to use the kit ourselves for a month. Look out for a more detailed report on how we fared with that shortly.
The other half of the challenge was to participate in some activities that embodied “meaningful beauty” to us. For me, that meant doing things that positively impact others since those are the activities I find most rewarding. This week, I surprised my overworked boyfriend with a trip to the spa where he indulged in a much needed massage. Last week, I sent my mom an early surprise holiday gift — a hydroponic herb garden so she could grow fresh ingredients right at home. When I first started this challenge, I didn’t really know what kinds of activities I was going to participate in, but as it turns out, there are so many things you can do that positively impacts other. For me, that’s what meaningful beauty means — and creating happiness and positively is surely one of the keys to eternal youthful beauty.
I’ve written before about my superhero special power for surviving long plane rides. And one new addition to my dry skin toolbelt is Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream, the cult product long revered by makeup artists, beauty editors, and celebrities. A welcome contrast to my beloved gel formula moisturizers, the hydration for the Eight Hour Cream comes in balm form with an ingredient list of Vitamin E, lanolin, and salicylic acid. With its thick paste, vaguely-Vaseline-y texture (56.8% petrolatum,) and slightly medicinal scent, at first, I didn’t really get the hype. At then I applied it to an oven burn I got earlier in the week. I dotted it on my eyelids for an all-natural makeup day. And I dabbed it in my lips prior to a outside run and I finally “got it.”
Eight Hour Cream is one of those mystical products that is appears to be able to do everything: condition, add shine, and hydrate. My burn healed faster, my eyelids had that “backstage makeup” freshness, and my lips were completely unaffected by the winter winds. Legend has it that Elizabeth herself, used it to rub down her thoroughbred horses. Since it does err on the paste side, it is best used as a preventative measure and sealing in moisture, rather than adding. I suggest using it in those forgotten areas that get easily neglected (cuticles, elbows, that tricky place underneath your ankle you always seem to miss when exfoliating) and then slathering it all over your hands and lips once you settle into what passes for an airline seat nowadays. But don’t just take it from me: Allison Williams of Girls is also a fan, picking some up last week at the Elizabeth Arden pop-up shop.
I’m about to get personal for a second. I do love a good wax (everyone has their reasons; for me, I just don’t like hair) but it can be hard to find a place that’s not awkward, clinical, or just too-serious. I also love painlessness (as close as you can get), easy-going aestheticians, a fun space, and during the winter months — some good holiday cheer. A couple weeks ago I finally had the chance to try out Strip: Ministry of Waxing – which checked off all of those aforementioned good qualities — and had just introduced its seasonal Gingerbread Cookie Wax, freshly imported from across the pond. No before/after pictures, but a report on the experience is below: (more…)
The old elastic hair tie on the wrist isn’t just boring, it’s uncomfortable and unsightly — especially when it leaves a crease behind. Fortunately, Mane Message founder Olivia Hayward has done something about that. Her line of “bohemian chic” soft elastic hair accessories double as simple, comfortable and attractive bracelets in almost every shade imaginable. (more…)
Comic book lovers and fans of Christopher Nolan’s angsty take on Batman–take note. We have found the shoe for you. For Holiday 2012, you will be able to customize your own Converse sneakers with iconic images of Batman, Catwoman, and the Joker. For those who like their comic book movies dark and gritty, this collaboration is a no brainer. Converse’s cool, downtown image perfectly juxtaposes with the dark knight’s moody black and white drawings. I like how you can coolly pick different color shoelaces (I’m partial to the graphic yellow) as a bright pop of color amongst the monotones and even choose different icons for the right and left shoe. Converse lets you customize every step, right down the color the shoe tongue and the shoe’s interior, but if you have decision fatigue, we’ve included pictures of our favorites above. The sneakers retail for $75 and you can build your own shoe here, on the Nike site.
I’ve never thought to match my nails to my bracelets, but when I saw the latest collaboration between Essie and Baublebar, I realized that it just makes so much sense! After all, I pretty much coordinate all the other colors in my outfits! The jewelry brand has designed a set of limited edition bracelets inspired by Essie’s winter collection. Users pick their favorite nail polish and bracelet pair (or multiple pairs since they are all so fab!) and then mix and match with 2 other bracelets to create a customized stacked set. All 4 items, (nail polish, matching bracelet, and the two other pieces) come in a luxe pouch and is sold for $50.
As I’ve recently become a huge fan of of BaubleBar, I obviously had to get my own set. My favorite is the Snap Happy (pictured above) which is a beautiful and festive tomato red. I decided play up the gold on the bangle and paired it with the Cubic Cuff and Baroque Clear Bangle. It was hard to decide though and even just playing on the site is so fun. The combinations are (almost) endless!
For more info, check out the collaboration on BaubleBar.com and be sure to show us your custom creation!
