Another holiday, another panic attack: What on earth is there left to get for the man in your life? Well, a good home-cooked meal should work, but if that’s not your idea of a special gift, I suggest you say “I love you” with:
… a Hot Shave
I recently got the chance to check out Alexander’s for Hair, a mid-range, family-owned, all-in-one spa and salon in west L.A., and I thought, “What a great place to take my [insert any family member here]!” Formerly the male-targeted Reeder’s Barber Shop, complete with beers and flatscreen TVs, Alexander’s for Hair has undergone a recent makeover to suit its growing clientele base, offering more services for both men and women as well as eco-friendly hair products by Eufora and high-quality GRAM skincare by Dr. Bernard Gramlich (you should see his skin!). Helmed by new owner Krissy Smith and her mom Jeanne Phares, the salon has both a small-town feel and a cosmopolitan flair — perfect for those who want luxurious treatment but find super-high-end salons and spas either intimidating or just not worth the extra dough. Best of all, while you’re loved one is getting his Signature MVP Hot Shave, you can indulge in a Eufora Deep Conditioning and Scalp Treatment (free this month with any color service), a fantastic facial, a mani-pedi or a delightful (and affordable) deep-tissue massage (ask for Barbara!). Ah, the perks of co-ed bliss.
Alexander’s for Hair is located at 11515 W. Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles. Call (310) 473-0462 to make an appointment. Readers, mention the code AFHGO through February and you’ll get 30 percent off your service!

If the love (or like) of your life is a label-savvy jet setter who frequently blends street style and upscale threads (or just likes any of the aforementioned), he’ll appreciate the new G3 collection by Ryz, the brainchild of former president of Adidas America and Adidas Japan Rob Langstaff. I’ve been hearing for years how fabulous Elle Macpherson Intimates are – from the luxurious fabrics to the fabulously sexy fits. I recently got to try out a few styles, courtesy of Freshpair.com, and I’ve definitely been missing out on this quality lingerie brand all of these years.
The intimates from Elle Macpherson’s line uses gorgeous fabrics that are luxurious to the touch, but still supportive in style (forewarning: the sizing runs small). The Sheer Ribbons style is one of my favorites because of the sheer black stripes edged with lace, which makes it both fun and sexy – so perfect for date night with someone special!
For a more classic vintage-inspired romantic style, try the Dentelle style. Each color it’s offered in has a contrast trim; the white/nude is perfect for brides out there while the sweet pink dogwood hue could make your everyday lingerie a bit more exciting. Even better, most of these styles come with matching bottoms in a comfortable bikini styles that are still very flattering and girly.
Which design is your favorite? Check out more styles from Elle Macpherson Intimates over at Freshpair.com.
Each few months, we urge you to take a look at your intimates drawer and refresh your collection if needed. (That means any pieces that are too small, too big, or generally tired-looking!) This season, I turned to intimates resource, FreshPair.com, and discovered Betsey Johnson Intimates for the first time. While I knew that Betsey Johnson had entered the intimates world, I hadn’t tried the styles out until now, and I’m so glad that I did. (more…)
A and B cups of the world unite! Maybe Kate Hudson wouldn’t have had to resort to her supposed implants, if she had tried out some of the lingerie from The Little Bra Company, a bra company focusing on making the most of your A and B cup assets, with prettily designed, delicate bras and panties.
In my own bra buying experience, almost all bras claim to give you the elusive promise of cleavage, but few are able to make it look natural. But, I was pleasantly surprised at the natural effects of The Little Bra Company’s bestselling bra, the Lucia, a deep V plunge, contour lacy bra, with push up. I attribute the bra’s cleavage inducing properties to the closer set together cups and sturdy, strong (but not uncomfortable) band. The bra has a snug, close fit, and softly molds your goods, gently pushing them up and together. A small tag on the band also comes with each bra, explaining the proper “method” (a sort of scoop and gather motion) for molding your assets into your bra.
Although lacy, because of a soft overlay, I liked that I had smooth lines despite wearing it under my V-Neck t shirt. The “girls” also looked great, as Stacey London would say, they were “up at attention and saying hello,” a effect that wasn’t lost on my lunch buddies, who all asked “What are you wearing?”
Although The Little Bra Company only carries A and B cup bras, smaller C cups can also benefit from their products also. I’m normally a small C cup, but because The Little Bra Company only carries A and B cups, I went one size larger in the band to compensate. The Lucia bra from The Little Bra Company retails for $56 and you can purchase it on their website.
I’m sure you’ve read or heard about a lot of shapewear on the market right now that claims to help you lose inches on those pesky problem areas on your body. I was never really a believer until Lytess contacted me to give their Slimming Corrective Belt a trial run. No matter how much I work out, I’ve always got some problem areas that are particularly stubborn–namely, my waist and hips. The Lytess Slimming Corrective Belt contains a unique blend of caffeine and shea butter, and is supposed to target just that. I was more than willing to give it a shot! (more…)
Lingerie and intimates are always a fun plus for Valentine’s Day (and beyond, of course). Unfortunately, they’re not always affordable, or even really available in terms of sizing. So this Valentine’s Day, I turned to Frederick’s of Hollywood for some great options and at all price points and sizes. They’ve got a selection of bras, panties, shapewear, and chemises that not only make you look good, but feel good as well.
I really like Frederick’s collection of chemises in particular because you can be a little less revealing and still look and feel sexy. Take the Juliette Ruched Chemise to the right, for example. It comes in a variety of colors, and while I prefer black, the Fredericks Red would be perfect for Valentine’s! The sheer mesh adds a bit of edge, while the ruching down the middle is more flattering. The back laces up almost like a corset and there are garters and even a g-string, if you’re so inclined. Keep reading for more sale and plus size pieces! (more…)
My underwear collection has certainly outgrown the small top drawer in my bureau, and now dominates a larger, deeper drawer normally used by sweater, jeans, and bulky clothing. Yes, I have an addiction and find myself “needing” a new pair or two just about every time I indulge in retail therapy.
Within the past year or two, Hanky Panky seems to be the undergarment of choice, with their lacy, feminine design and with their “one size fits most” claim, they go with everything and fit nearly everyone. Well, Hanky Panky literally had my panties in a bunch, as they do not fit me! For someone who is of fairly average height and build, the saleswomen and I were baffled why they don”t working for me. When news came last year that Stella McCartney was branching out into lingerie, I thought the partnership was a no brainer. Stella’s naturally romantically inclined designs and her favorite color palette of midnight black, sexy nudes, and dusty pinks seemed perfectly suited to a lingerie collection. Looking through her Fall 2009 lookbook, I loved her vintage inspired, girly, and cozy looking collection. This was the type of lingerie that was meant to be lounged in, on cold winter nights with a blazing fire and a cozy cardigan(and preferably someone to share it with.) (more…)
