Sales & Events
If there’s one sample sale I actually make a point to hit up every year, this would be it. I swung by the press sale yesterday and ladies…the gettin’s good. Lots and lots of black–leather, dresses, blazers, pants–timeless pieces that are perfect for the upcoming season. Both men’s and women’s products from Alexander Wang as well as T by Alexander Wang are set around the warehouse-y space. My big scores however were a new Pelican satchel in pristine white ($350, marked down from $1000) and a pair of nude Sonja bandage pumps from AW12 (pristine condition) for $175. The prices are already great, so don’t wait around until the end for additional markdowns because the great stuff won’t last long.
We don’t usually post too many sales alerts on this blog, but given the fact that we went to the David Yurman Sample Sale a few years ago and scored big (huge!)- think necklaces, rings, and bracelets for around $200 a piece- we thought we’d post this sale notice as more of a PSA. This year’s sale will take place from October 11-14 at the Altman Building in NYC and feature items at 30-60% off their retail price. As a bonus, 10% of the proceeds from the first day will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The sentiment of cheering for sports has never made sense to me. My high school football team had a record of 1 (wins) – 19 (losses.) I went to a university where the mascot was the viola adorata, better known as the fighting violet. But during the Olympics, my inner Bill Simmons comes forth and I become the rabid sports fan I could have been (had I been raised in a house where the SuperBowl and not QuizBowl was celebrated.)
In honor of the epic event being hosted across the pond, we’ve decided to highlight some of our favorite UK beauty products the next few weeks. We start first with an old TDO favorite (the subject of our first beauty product spotlight when we were only one year old!): Elemis. I recently got the chance to check out Alexander’s for Hair, a mid-range, family-owned, all-in-one spa and salon in west L.A., and I thought, “What a great place to take my [insert any family member here]!” Formerly the male-targeted Reeder’s Barber Shop, complete with beers and flatscreen TVs, Alexander’s for Hair has undergone a recent makeover to suit its growing clientele base, offering more services for both men and women as well as eco-friendly hair products by Eufora and high-quality GRAM skincare by Dr. Bernard Gramlich (you should see his skin!). Helmed by new owner Krissy Smith and her mom Jeanne Phares, the salon has both a small-town feel and a cosmopolitan flair — perfect for those who want luxurious treatment but find super-high-end salons and spas either intimidating or just not worth the extra dough. Best of all, while you’re loved one is getting his Signature MVP Hot Shave, you can indulge in a Eufora Deep Conditioning and Scalp Treatment (free this month with any color service), a fantastic facial, a mani-pedi or a delightful (and affordable) deep-tissue massage (ask for Barbara!). Ah, the perks of co-ed bliss.
Alexander’s for Hair is located at 11515 W. Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles. Call (310) 473-0462 to make an appointment. Readers, mention the code AFHGO through February and you’ll get 30 percent off your service!

If the love (or like) of your life is a label-savvy jet setter who frequently blends street style and upscale threads (or just likes any of the aforementioned), he’ll appreciate the new G3 collection by Ryz, the brainchild of former president of Adidas America and Adidas Japan Rob Langstaff. I normally don’t make a fuss about sales, but it’s payday and I couldn’t resist some seriously glam accessories like this Large Gold Turquoise Bubble Klimt Ring, $116.25, above. Pick it up along with a pair of Miss Havisham Clear Liquid Lucite Earrings, $145, (my fave) for 25 percent off at Alexis Bittar’s annual summer sale, which kicks off July 1st (tomorrow!) online at alexisbittar.com and in his NYC boutiques.
You’ll be able to get discounts on the Spring/Summer 2010 collection, full of sculptural, ethereal, fun and funky pieces made of semi-precious stones and metals. (Inspired by his antique-collecting parents and NYC club days in the ’80s, Bittar makes jewelry fit for the likes of Bergdorf’s, Saks, Burberry, Estee Lauder, Michael Kors — and Sex and the City’s stylist Patricia Field. So this is one designer you’ll want to add to your wardrobe.) Go, go, go!
