Being under 5′ 4″, I try to avoid shoes with ankle straps for fear they will make me look even shorter — but I simply can’t resist the Spring 2013 ankle strap sandal trend! My choice for short gals? The elegant Elizabeth and James Toni Ankle Strap Bare Sandal in Nude. Its thin, flesh-colored cowhide leather straps don’t break the line of your leg like a thicker printed or black sandal would.
At $298, they’re a bit of an investment, but here’s how I look at it: They have a curved 4-inch heel (with a .25-inch platform), so they’ll be slightly easier to walk in than say, the $45 Michael Antonio Jaxine Rep, which has a straighter 4.25-inch heel and no platform. (FYI, I strongly considered the latter.) And ultimately, a shoe like this is worth an investment. The style will last for years and go with everything. I plan to pair them with pastel cropped skinny jeans and practically every cocktail dress I own.
It seems that once we enter adulthood, gift-giving becomes exponentially harder. No one registers for anything past their wedding or first baby, and expectations unfairly go up. So when I stumble on a website with unique or quirky gifts that will be used and loved, I’ll bookmark it for later when I’m crunched for ideas. Seltzer Goods, a Brooklyn-based design company, is my newest bookmark — their selection of small well-thought out gifts are cute, witty and functional, the source of many smiles to come. The goods won’t break the bank, but they’ll actually be used (as opposed to that golf putting thingy). Here are my favorites:
1) Seven-Year Pen. I’m a pen person — I love colors but above all, I need a smooth operator, something that makes writing a joy. I have my Bee Happy Pen beside me at all times now, because the cheerful yellow design reminds me of the sun and being outside, and it writes so well! The best part is that it’s designed to write 1.7 meters a day for seven years — this is no throwaway pen.
2) Bee Happy Notebook. I love this lightweight notebook, it reminds me of an old-school tablet but is made of 100% recycled paper. At the moment, I’ve been jotting down notes to remind myself (anyone else make lists like crazy?) of fun things… plan a vacay, go shopping…
3) Nerd Glasses Tote. Didn’t you know that nerds are the new cool? This retro-looking tote is light and durable, and it’s unisex enough that my hubby will carry it. It’s gusseted so it’s bigger than it looks, and it comes with a round wooden tag which can be personalized on the back.
4) Little Brat- Card. This will convey your sweet message with a touch of whit and a big chuckle. Aren’t we all little brats at heart? Look for greeting cards for any occasion and any person in your life. Cards are underrated, in my opinion. Let’s bring ‘em back!
It’s always fun to see a fellow blogger snag a modeling gig with a cool brand. In this case, I’m referring to actress, model and Trop Rouge blogger Christina Caradona, the new face of Ready to Wear designer Valentina Shah‘s Spring-Summer 2013 collection, which debuted this month.
Already seen on celebrities such as Alicia Keys and Cindy Crawford, Valentina Shah clothing is an sexy hybrid of old world beauty, inspired by Valentina’s days in Rome uncovering her grandmother’s vintage pieces, and modern chic, likely inspired by her 10+ years as a fashion executive. I was immediately drawn to this collection — her second thus far — because of its timelessness and versatility. (more…)
We don’t use the word ‘ultimate’ here lightly at TDO, since the TDO seal of approval is hard to come by. Our testing process is languorous. We test products. We ask our friends for their opinions. We concur about the results. We test them for multiple days, in different situations. Sometimes, in an effort to create a control, we test products on only half our face (which is why I’ve come to prefer my left side as my “best” side.) But after only two wears, I’m ready and quick to bestow it upon Comando’s Opaque Matte Tights. They are the tights of my dreams–tights that aren’t actually tight. Much like their famed silky underwear, these tights feel like next to nothing, with a unique knit blend, which I can only describe using adjectives that sound oxymoron-ish. Words like light, dense, thick, comfortable, and a perfect black. These tights are as opaque as Anna Wintour’s eyes during a fashion show–impenetrable and revealing nothing, not a single line beneath clothes. And the best part? These tights are completely elastic-free, with a dig-free, wide banded waistband. So you can feel comfortable going completely commando this winter.
I’ve been obsessed with accessories this month, and this is the perfect excuse to get some great pieces at affordable prices. (I’m still so fond of my first CC SKYE Vintage Showstopper Ring, I wear it all the time.) If you have time and are in L.A., head to the CC SKYE sample sale today to get in touch with your inner Malibu Barbie rockstar. See you there!
Whenever I’m lost on what to wear, my thoughts immediately turn to Halston Heritage. Something about colors and the way the fabric drapes make for just the right combination of sexy and glamorous yet comfortable. My top choices for Valentine’s Day (or any other time you’re feeling pink): For casual days, I love the idea of a sweatshirt over a long pink Accordion-Pleated Chiffon Maxi Skirt. For dinner out, the flouncy, feminine Reverse Shark Dress is a romantic choice. And for semi-formal to formal affairs, the Georgette Grecian Gown is a serious stunner.
My good friend Jen, who has the skin of a 2-year-old, just tipped me off about the Josie Maran Argan Care for Beautiful Skin kit at Sephora. At only $56, it’s such a good deal. (I mean, a full-size Josie Maran Argan Oil by itself is $48!) It even comes with a pack of one of our favorites makeup removers, Bare Naked Wipes, as well as a cleanser, lip treatment, and blush/lip color.
If you’re an Argan-oil fan, or just need a great lightweight all-purpose moisturizer, don’t miss out. We’ve professed our love for Josie Maran products many times before, and the line continues to exceed our expectations. I can’t wait to get my hands on this … in fact, I won’t wait. I’m going right now, and I might even snag their brand new Josie Maran Argan Balm while I’m at it.
Now that holiday shopping is kicking into full gear, we’ve been tasked by American Express to blog about our take on making smart online shopping choices. Throughout this week, we’ll be providing some of our trusty tips on making smart shopping decisions for the season. American Express is also extending an opportunity for TDO readers to win $250 of merchandise or giftcards through AMEX’s Membership Rewards partners. You don’t have to be an AMEX cardholder to win… but you will need to share with us your online shopping mistakes and favorite shopping tips!
In the comments below, share with us your biggest online shopping mistake. We will publish a list of “top ten” mistakes submitted by our readers in the next week and select a winner of the contest who can choose $250 worth of merchandise or gift cards.
To kick things off, I’ll share a shopping mistake of my own…
Buying “final sale” clothing items when said item costs more than $20. For $20 or under, I could probably take the risk of committing to a deep markdown without ever having tried it on. But truthfully, I’ve bought too many things that were “marked down 85% but still $200 because it’s designer” which ended up not fitting… with no recourse. They now sit in a pile in the back of my closet- and just to think, that aggregated together, my mistake purchases could’ve totaled into something investment-worthy and fantastic. Sigh. You live, shop, and learn.
Now be sure to share with us your mistakes to enter to win (and so I don’t make them this season) and stay tuned for more tips this week!
We think she’s pretty … without any makeup on ...
Well, this weekend I saw Katy Perry in concert, courtesy of Proactiv, and she had a LOT of makeup on. But I still left the show with three things on my mind: the lyrics to “California Gurls” (unavoidable), Katy’s Snow White complexion and her lust-worthy sequin mary janes. (more…)
